Garden In Bloom: Week Ten

There really hasn't been much to share in the garden this week. Growth has slowed on the Hibiscus and there are some tiny buds forming. Cross your fingers and maybe we'll see some blooms in the next week or so. In other yard news, we have the sad excuse for a pond in the backyard that hasn't seen any progress since Week One but the liner has filled with water from rain and such. We had noticed early in the summer a Robins nest in the tree over the pond site. I noticed this weekend, sadly, a baby bird floating in the water. So what was once an exciting thing in the backyard is now kind of sad. My beautiful daylillies

Oh, little after thought. We have two new additions to the family this week. First, my cousin Ricci welcomed her first baby boy into the world at 7:24 this morning. We are so excited to meet baby Jack (sorry, no pics yet).
Next is my mom's new puppy Twinkie.........isn't she sweet?

Garden In Bloom: Week Two

This weekend Dallas and I spent some time removing large boulders from the makeshift pond the previous owners had placed. It was really horrible looking. It looked like they took a huge pile of rocks and put a hole in the middle and placed a rubber pond liner. Problem was they didn't cover the edge of the liner and so it looked unfinished. Last summer we purchased a smaller hard pond liner (bought it used on KSL) to use to downsize this massive disaster. It will take some time as it is not our top priority for the yard this year and we know very little about this stuff. So if anyone needs any rocks, we will certainly have plenty.

Now, to the garden out front, we cut the big ugly tree down, and it surprisingly doesn't look too bad. I was afraid of the tree being gone being such a drastic change that I'd panic and want it back up. I tend to do that with major visual changes. I freak out for a minute and then realize it's OK. We started digging around the root, but today work was halted by my husbands cold. We've also run into a problem with what is in and under the soil around the root. We have found lots of red lava rock and bricks, which makes digging around a tree root so much more fun. Again, another thing the previous owners did. They placed the castle retaining wall and fill with dirt over what we think was an existing smaller garden closer to the house. Hopefully we'll have it all removed by the end of the week. I hope my lilac can live in it's container for a little longer.
